This inspired a bit of a rant.
I've noticed people tend to be obsessed with photo-realism, as though it was the best thing since sliced bread.
The thing is, when you draw straight from ref, not even trying to make interesting brush marks, or not even thinking about the composition (ie you don't re-arrange the objects and shapes to better them) etc etc, you just mindlessly copy what in front of your eyes then you're just being a copy machine. You're not creating anything. You're just trying to get pixels filled in a way they'll look like something else that was already there. It's mathematic. Where's the art in that? Where's the creativity in that? Where's the *you* in that? After all, art is a way of expressing oneself or an idea and you're not saying anything by just copying a picture a photographer took.

It is extremely valid for learning purposes, that's for sure! It trains your ability to see proportion and color and value relationship and limitation of medium etc etc etc. But it's not exactly art. The fact that you have the skill set to copy something is awesome! Kudos to you. It'll help a lot in making your art. But unless that's put together with picture-making skills, what's the point?

I'm not, by this, at *all* saying or implying that portrait artists are not artists. Because when a portrait artist makes a portrait they won't be just copying a photo like a printer. They'll be making decisions, choosing colors, shapes, light, marks, grouping, composition. And therein lies the art.

I say this, because it annoys me to see awesome artists around here on DA that are just amazing, amazing and amazing. Yet their art is not considered 'good enough' because it's otherwise stylized. I mean I heard it loads before "Oh, this-person paints like that because they don't know how to do anything better". Better? How is realism better? What is 'better'? And funny enough, a lot of artists of different art movements throughout history could probably render a photo-realistic picture with their eyes closed, yet they chose to stick to their own way and thinking of what 'art' and 'expression' means to them.

Anyway, I have ranted.
I have decided to submit this to the contest "I love my art"
freepm.deviantart.com/blog/308… by :iconfreepm: cause this painting stirred all sorts of thoughts and discussions about what art means to me.

E obriagda :D

I'm torn between agreeing and disagreeing.

On one hand, I can see why references are important. If you're working on realism, you want to accurately portray what you see. That's the main point. It's not really copying, it's just trying to be precise. You have to know anatomy before you can successfully abbreviate it and simplify it to your style. You have to know the rules to break them.

There are too many people who stress out over realism, though. I've had my fair share of art teachers who failed me because realism was so difficult, given my style. I appreciate that someone else realizes that if you're creating art, it really is about what you want and what your style is. Like comic book artists, for example; I'm sure most of them can draw things other than comic book heroes, even more realistically, but the point of the comic book is to be in that style.

I guess I can just see both sides of it.

All of that rant of my own aside, this is a great piece. I can tell that it's House, which automatically earns points in my book. Even in this style, you had to deal with artistic choices like value and line shape/thickness, etc. It still took a great deal of skill to render this art.

It just goes to show that realism isn't the end all, be all of art.

Actually everything that you said is what I believe :O
I think one should *study* realism a lot before stylizing things the way you want. Exactly what you said about breaking the rules
What I don`t really understand is people that only do this kinda of copy-machine art, you know? For me, personaly, it doesn`t show any emotion :/ it`s just a copy from the emotion portraited by the photographer who took the picture.
But that`s just me :P

And thank you very much, I appreciate the comment :)

Ah. XD I guess I thought it was more of a "ihy realism" thing. It's useful at times. Like in my comics, I sort of joke that the 'art isn't the point.' That is to say, I try to keep things decently done so it looks like I'm halfway competent, but other than that...you just can't make sure to keep every tiny detail of something like that perfectly realistic, or you'll be working forever.

No problem. :3

i know what you mean with the realism and copying its good to be able to find a balance, however this is quite brilliant and you capture him perfectly.
